What is Chiropractic Care?

Doctors of Chiropractic, referred to as chiropractors, practice a drug-free, hands-on
approach to health care that includes examination, diagnosis, and care of the spine
and nervous system. Chiropractors are uniquely trained to look at the body
differently from traditionally-trained health care providers. We are experts in the
detection and correction of vertebral subluxations. A subluxation is a misalignment
of vertebra or vertebrae that interferes with normal nerve communication from the
brain to the body and from the body to the brain.

Chiropractors apply techniques that harness the body’s natural ability to restore
itself. They may also recommend rehabilitative exercises and therapies based on an
individual’s specific needs. Traditional medicine is often unnecessary and overused.
Both drugs and surgery carry risks that potentially outweigh the benefits, and should
be the last resort considered. Chiropractic care works with the body to correct
subluxations and restore proper function.

The practice of manipulating the spine and skeletal system dates back thousands of
years, to the Greek physician Hippocrates. The modern science of spinal adjustment
was brought to light in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer. Palmer’s hypothesis and work
as a healer led him to establish Chiropractic as a specialty in America, and it’s been
gaining momentum ever since. Millions of people around the world are finding relief
from their symptoms, and a greater sense of health and well-being, from the benefits
of chiropractic care.

The art of chiropractic care is based on the concept of vitalism, or the body’s innate
ability to heal and regulate itself. The immune and neurological systems are inherent
to the miracle of life itself, from the time your cells first grow together in the womb,
lasting throughout your entire life. By keeping your systems healthy, you enable the
healing functions that are a part of your very design, and promote a higher level of
health and happiness.

The Human Nervous System

Chiropractic works with the nervous system, which controls
and coordinates every function in the body. Nerve impulses
travel from your brain to every cell in your body and back to
your brain. This circular connection maintains function and
health in our autonomic systems, as well as your ability to
execute voluntary actions, like walking, lifting, speaking, and
                            so forth.

Stay Connected! Autonomic (automatic) systems are all the functions we cannot
consciously control, like heartbeat and circulation, blood sugar

levels, tissue repair, antibody production, and other immune responses.

Because the nervous system is the body’s information highway – our communication
infrastructure – it is constantly transmitting data to and from the master control
center. When all parts are online, we function as we should. When interference
occurs, we have reduced functionality and, too often, illness and pain.
