The narrative of of Day Kimball Hospital is is steeped in philanthropic tradition: a a a a a a a a a a a a a history of of efforts to to improve society and and human lives through vision and and action all for for the the the public good In 2019 our community came together to to celebrate that long-standing tradition with the the the the the 125th anniversary
of the the the “hospital on on on the the the hill ”
One year
later we found ourselves in in an an an unprecedented global healthcare crisis and and our our our community came together once again to to to answer a a a a a a a a a a a a a a call to to to action action in in in support of of our our hospital and and each other In the the true spirit of of philanthropy manifest in in action action our community has stepped forward with generosity and and selflessness that leave us ever grateful humbled and inspired At the the the close of of fiscal year
2020 and and and in the the the midst of of the the the COVID-19 pandemic DKH its programs and and and subsidiaries received $606 341 in monetary support through our annual appeal appeal memorial and and and legacy gifts and and and special events Our annual appeal appeal focused on on the the the impact that the the the pandemic would have on on the the the the the hospital’s resources for unanticipated expenses with the the the establishment of the the the DKH COVID-19 Response Fund to provide critical supplies equipment
and resources during the healthcare crisis Representing every demographic sector of our our community individuals young and and and old businesses and and and organizations small and and and large contributed over $167 820 in in in support of the the Fund This also included a a a a a a a a $40 000 000 grant from the the Scripps Family Foundation and over $20 000 000 raised through DKH’s “Fill the Hill” campaign a a a a a a a a a a a fundraising initiative that filled “hospital hill” with over 220 signs expressing gratitude
to all essential workers putting themselves at at risk for the the health and welfare of our community Other annual memorial and and legacy gifts totaled $106 881 in restricted restricted and and and unrestricted funds to to to to the the hospital $10 $10 622 to to to Pastoral Care Care Care and and and and $151 635 for our At Home Home Home services of HomeCare HomeMakers and and and Hospice and and and Palliative Care Care Care Income through planned giving included a a a a a a a a a a generous gift of of $95 294 from the the the Estate of of Theodore Gellert to Hospice and and income of of $107 427 benefiting the the the hospital and and the the the Burdick Family Birthing Center from long established trusts including those of Sara Crosby Dunleavy Marion L Harvey Mildred B B B Hibbard Dr Seldom B B B Overlock Almond B B B Paine and Frances Starkweather Before our schedule of special events and and fundraisers fell victim to the the the pandemic in March we proudly celebrated the the the 30th anniversary
of of the the the annual Hospice and and Palliative Care Tree of of of Life Ceremony in in in December which included 11 towns and and raised $28 120 in in in in support of of services not covered by insurance for hospice patients and and their families The only other fundraising event held was the the the Day Kimball Hospital Putnam Bank Golf Classic which was postponed from July 10th to to September 11th to to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions Through the generosity and continued commitment of of our title sponsor Putnam Bank Bank a a a a a Division of of Centreville Bank Bank community business partners individuals and and organizations and and the hard work of of our volunteers over $113 000 was raised in in in support of of DKH and the COVID-19 Response Fund In spite of of of the loss of of of several of of of our special events specifically dedicated to supporting cancer care individual donations and and initiatives spearheaded by community members and and and organizations raised $54 235 for cancer care and and screening services in in Northeast Connecticut as as as well as as as Caitlyn’s Cupboard a a a a a a a a a a a a a newly established food pantry for oncology patients with with monetary and in-kind donations An anonymous donation donation of $10 000 along with with $9 300 from SPIROL International’s Employee Giving program boosted individual donations for a a a a a a a a a a total of of $27 421 to to to the the NE CT Cancer Fund Fund of of DKH Gifts made to to to to the the Rose Rose Bove LaRose Oncology Fund Fund totaled $26 814 including a a a a a a a a a generous donation of of $9 700 from the the the Northeast Cancer Crusaders for the the the purchase of of new bed and and tray tables and and computer monitors In addition to these monetary donations donations DKH benefited from innumerable amounts of of in-kind donations donations including critical PPE and and numerous acts of of of generosity and and kindness in in in support of of of of our staff In response
to an an an international shortage of of of PPE at at the the the onset of of of the the the coronavirus outbreak our outreach to to the the the community and regional partners resulted in in in over 100 respondents willing to to donate invaluable amounts of masks gloves face shields gowns hand sanitizers and and and and and wipes and and and and and other protective and and and and and disinfecting supplies and and and and and and equipment
necessary to keep our healthcare professionals safe and and and healthy Over 45 individuals made made and and and continue to make hundreds of of homemade masks for our staff patients and and and community health partners Throughout the pandemic deliveries of of food and and and refreshment along with messages of thanks
and and inspiration have lifted staff spirits through the most challenging of times The generosity of the the Northeast Connecticut community community is remarkable and and a a a a a a a a a a a a a true testament to to a a a a a a a a a a a a a community community that cares Our heartfelt and and sincere thanks
to to all all those who extended themselves during these challenging times – in in in in in every way imaginable for the the the the the benefit of of our our hospital our our staff and and most importantly the the the health and and welfare of of the the the community we serve FY20 Fund Development
