Act Out

Life in the Quarter during the War of Independence

The war over the Jewish quarter is very difficult. The quarter is
in a state of daily fire.
After a few months, there are only 1,700 people in the quarter,
because the elderly people and children leave for the New
Jerusalem.
Those who stay in the quarter – stay under fire.
The commander of the quarter begs the people to stay and pays
yeshiva students who want to learn Torah under fire.
Everyone who stays in the quarter helps to protect the quarter,
even children.
The children in the quarter, who know every place and every
house, help the soldiers and show them how to walk in the
quarter quietly at night… in the places that only the children
know.
One child, Nissim Gini, is killed from the shooting of a
Jordanian sniper while he is helping Jewish soldiers. He is the
youngest martyr in the Jewish Army.
