International Student – A person who is not a citizen or national of the United States and who is in this country on a visa or temporary basis and

does not have the right to remain indefinitely. This category is mutually exclusive with the other race/ethnicity categories. CHE methodology
does not permit the reporting of these students under additional race or ethnicity categories.

Master’s Degree – An award that requires the successful completion of a program of study of at least the full-time equivalent of one, but not more

than two, academic years of work beyond the Bachelor’s degree.

Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander - A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands.

Program Time – The length of time it will take a student enrolled full-time to complete a specific degree. Examples of standard program times are
two years for an Associate’s degree and four years for a Bachelor’s degree.

Race/Ethnicity – Categories developed in 1997 by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) used to describe groups to which individuals
belong or identify with. The categories do not denote scientific definitions of anthropological origins. These categories are assigned to U.S.

citizens, resident aliens, and other eligible non-citizens. CHEMIS methodology states individuals who select Hispanic/Latino or are non-
resident aliens are not assigned an additional race category.

Specialist Degree – An award that requires the completion of an organized program of study that awards the specialist degree (beyond Master’s)
but does not meet the requirements of an academic degree at the Doctor’s level.

Two or More Races – A student selects more than one race category. This category is mutually exclusive with the other race/ethnicity categories.
CHE methodology does not count these students in the headcounts for the individual races they selected.

Unknown Race/Ethnicity – This category is used only if the student did not self-report a race or ethnic designation, and the college or university

finds it impossible to place the student in one of the aforementioned race/ethnicity categories during established enrollment procedures or in
any post-enrollment identification or verification process.

White – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, North Africa, or the Middle East.
