Hyper-Threading

 SMT on Intel’s Microprocessors - Pentium-4/Xeon/Nehalem/Atom

 The OS treats the system as a dual-processor system

 Statically partition some queues and buffers including IQ
 A complete set of architectural state resources (registers)

 Physical execution resources (execution units, branch predictors,
and control logic, caching) are shared by the two logical processors

Alpha EV8-21464

 Proposed by Compaq in 1999 – But abandoned later

 4-Way SMT– Eight issue processor (resource sharing)
 SMT proposed by the team of the Univ. of Washington
 Implementation problems due to complexity of reg. file & issue logic
