BRIEF Each coffee bush requires up to 4 years to

Labour shortages have plagued the coffee
industry in recent years but harvesting
issues pale in comparison to a larger
problem—coffee bushes in Puerto Rico are
facing extinction at an alarming rate.

The Puerto Rican Secretary of Agriculture
Josué Rivera Castro has stated the alarming
condition of coffee production to local
press, highlighting the slow recovery from

Hurricane Maria in 2017 as one of the main
issues facing coffee farmers in the region.
         The hurricane devastated farms and
destroyed over 20 million trees, and now
eight years later, there have only been
         around 150,000 trees replanted.

compared to 39.3% of men during 2023 in the
UK, and in the US in 2024, 95% of consumers
asked by NIQ said they were concerned with
taking action to live more sustainably.
