This potential error affects both flavour and
aroma in the cup creating two substandard
senses of perceived quality. So, to counter
difficult cleaning what can you look for in
your choice of grinder?
A) fast easy removal of bean hopper
B) easy access to the coffee burrs
C) easy pictorial or video cleaning guides
D) simple fast recalibration post cleaning of
all previous setting.
Take care in these areas when making your
choice.
5. Channeling. Much research has been
done recently into the phenomena of
channeling whereby even after tamping,
water will find the ‘free’ way to pass through
the ground coffee, speeding up and passing
through some zones faster than others
resulting in an uneven unbalanced
extraction. You can buy specific tools to help
avoid this, pre-extraction, but of course
these add time, cost and complexity to your
operation. It’s a better solution to avoid
channeling by avoiding clumps in your
ground coffee. Choose a grinder with
proven clump crusher technology and you
will experience even, fluffy grinds that give a
universal base for the perfect extraction.

Before you buy a grinder, try to
experience how it grinds your coffee
and pay attention to the size of coffee
agglomerates. If clumps are completely
absent then that’s a good sign!
6. Understanding your investment.
Hopefully by understanding what to look
for, and why when choosing a grinder,
you can also see the futility in spending
money on a good coffee machine if its
performance can be cancelled by a bad
grinder. Understand also that access to
technical information for engineers,
spare parts availability and updates to
firmware will also extend the quality life
of your grinder so ask questions and
aim to justify your investment over a
period of time you have confidence in
the grinder’s operation. Just to recap,
your coffee grinder along with your
coffee machine and the water quality is
just as important as the beans you
choose and the baristas you hire.
