Joe figured that three “Why” questions would usually
exhaust their depth of knowledge and he would get a
really good handle on how smart they really were.
Worked like a charm – I wish he had done that with
George.
SPOOK FOR A FEW DAYS
I had gotten pretty active in the American Society for
Metals (ASM) and was getting some national exposure
because of my titanium expertise. A major, three or
four-day-long, international symposium on titanium had
been organized for Boston and I was asked to be a
rapporteur for the session on welding and ultrasonic
inspection. There were so many submitted papers that
there was no way the authors could present their own
papers. My job, as rapporteur, was to carefully read all
the papers in my session, interpret them, and present my
summary of all the submitted papers to the audience. The
authors would be on-stage only to answer questions after
my presentation of their submittal.
About a week before the symposium, a visitor appeared at
my desk for a private meeting. He introduced himself as
Herb White (I have no idea why I remember that) and
