They were a nice friendly bunch of guys who knew
exactly why I was there. I reported the results of my
conversations and observations those evenings to a tape
recorder held by a couple of guys from the US Army
Intelligence community. End of story.
Incidentally, the main application for three or four-inch
thick welded titanium alloy plate would be submarine
pressure hulls.
OLLIE H AND ROCKET CITY (POST-APOLLO PERIOD)
Our advanced design bunch was a room full of “crazies”
that seemed to have no limits on their ability to imagine
and then create concepts that were truly mind-boggling.
Their job was to extend the boundaries of existing
technology and capability to reach unfathomable goals
for the company and country. Even though I was a leader
in our Advanced Programs & Technology organization,
there was absolutely no way I could extend my thought
process to match up with these folk. One of those
advanced design folk was a gentleman named Ollie H.
Ollie simply had no limits on his imagination. This story
is about Ollie, not me. I was just an observer.
