RESTRUCTURING THE (M&P) DEPARTMENT
My buddy, Hank B, and I were sort of considered “Young
Turks” because we were doing stuff that other people had
not done, and we were not too afraid of management
revenge. After the debacle with the work hours petition
(above), we modified our written approach to challenging
management by working in our homes at night. By this
time Joe had just become Chief Engineer of the Materials
and Process Engineering Department. Hank and I were
still down a few notches (non-supervisory). We thought
that Joe’s organization was not optimally structured, and
thought we should restructure the whole thing. We
worked at night and prepared a report pointing out the
shortcoming of Joe’s organization, and went further by
providing an organization (chart and functions) that we
thought would work a lot better.
We entered Joe’s office with just a little bit of trepidation
from our last encounter and handed him our report. Joe’s
first question after scanning the report:
“How many copies of this thing are out there?”
Us: “Just three - yours, mine and Hanks.”
