IFSA has developed this engineering program in Shanghai to help you plan your syllabus around a curated menu of
academic visits and co-curricular activities relevant to your class. You have the option to use this sample as is or work with
IFSA to customize this program to match your vision for your class.
Program Title: Ready to Go! Engineering in Shanghai
Program length can be customized to your institution?s preferences. This sample represents a two-week program.
A city of engineering feats, innovation, and manufacturing, Shanghai has much to offer engineering students from any
discipline. From soaring civil structures to tiny semiconductors, IFSA can help you to build a program specific to your
specialized needs.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
- Class meeting space at the IFSA Shanghai Flagship center on weekdays
- Two to three guest lectures utilizing experts from IFSA?s local networks to complement the academic themes of the
program. Examples of relevant lecture topics can include, but are not limited to:
- Urbanization, Urban Planning, and Civil Engineering in Shanghai
- China?s Contributions to Biomedical Engineering Research
- Approaches to Innovation and Mechanical/Electronic Engineering
- Five to six academic site visits, including engaging discussions and Q&A opportunities, such as:
- Auto Industry Tour: Chinese auto manufacturers cater mostly to a domestic market, but exporting has
been increasing steadily and more international exports are expected in the years to come. Recently there
has also been a shift toward producing electric cars, as China strives to meets its Paris Climate Agreement
targets. Participants will be able to see the production line in action and learn about the production
process.
- Electronic Components Mall: For electronic engineers, a visit to one of Shanghai?s electronic components
malls will be a dream come true. The variety and quantity of electronic components available spans
several floors and participants will be able to find anything they are looking for and maybe some
components they have not encountered before.
- Visit to Semiconductor Manufacturer:The Pudong District is often referred to as the Silicon Valley of
Shanghai. It is home to significant semiconductor manufacturing and innovation. Participants will visit a
semiconductor manufacturer and learn about the everyday workings of the fabrication facility.
- Biomedical Engineering Company: Shanghai has a rapidly developing biomedical and bioengineering
sector and is becoming a hub for innovation in this industry. If there is a particular bioengineering area of
interest, this visit can be tailored to your program.
- Environmental Engineering Company: As China makes strides toward meeting Paris Climate Agreement
targets, environmental and consulting firms have bloomed. Many existing engineering firms have
developed working groups and subsidiaries to reduce environmental impact.
- Shanghai Tower: One of the world?s tallest buildings, Shanghai Tower is a feat of civil engineering that
cannot be missed when visiting Shanghai. Students will have an opportunity to learn about the tower?s
construction and visit the world?s highest observation deck.
- Place-as-Text Activity to promote cultural immersion and help students acquaint themselves to their new
surroundings utilizing the ?city as a laboratory.?
- An Essential Mandarin Language Session to equip students with key terms and phrases to help navigate their new
host environment.
- Interpreters as needed.
- Recommended books, articles, and other briefing materials for these activities can be provided upon request.
