2017 Report of City
Thanks to El Dorado for hosting this year’s convention
Attending this year’s convention are: President Richard Morehead, newly elected Vice President Joe
Cuffel, Secretary/Treasurer Roger Pool, Battalion Representative Matt Stallings, Battalion Representative
Jason Mize, Battalion Representative Cain Harrison and Battalion Representative Casey Jones. One
Alternate Charles Austin.
We were successful in changing the way our members get paid. Changing our FSLA pay cycle from a 27
day cycle to a 14 day cycle. What does that mean for our members? More scheduled overtime for our
members and a shorter pay period for voluntary overtime worked outside our regularly scheduled hours.
Members can understand their checks because the lag in overtime payments has been reduced. We are
currently working through small issues associated with not averaging the pay for everyone but overall it’s
been a positive change.
We have been patiently waiting and believe our city will build a new fire station this year and hire an
additional 24 firefighters to staff the station. The new station and staffing was funded through the sales tax
that our local work extremely hard to pass.
We are preparing for this year’s upcoming negotiations with the City of Little Rock as our current
agreement runs through the remainder of 2017.
We have started this year’s annual fund raising with our first event being MDA “Fill the Boot”. Our
Children’s Hospital Golf Tournament will be June 7 and if anyone would like to attend or play please see
th
Joe Cuffel. To fund our annual Operation Warm coat drive we recently asked our members to voluntary
contribute through payroll deduction. That effort resulting in raising about $12,000 a year which we also
have found a corporate sponsor that will match our contributions. Little Rock has 28 elementary schools
and our goal is provide coats to every kid at those schools over a period of ten years.
This past election cycle of city board positions we held interviews of each person running for city board.
Questionnaires were developed and sent to each candidate about our issues and the interviews are based
upon the information we received back from the candidates. All of our endorsed candidates won their
election. Can’t say enough about how important it is to develop a process to find or endorse candidates
that will support firefighter’s issues that are decision makers of your city.
In Solidarity,
Richard Morehead, President
