THE PASSIONATE PLOTTER: MARKETING MATTERS
Do not underestimate the value of a simple word
of thanks to the people who choose to share a
part of their day with you. I can assure you, if
you’re unkind at the reading, they will NOT ask
the librarian to order your book, nor will they refer
your book to their friends. So be nice. It never
hurts.
If you’ve never done a public reading
before, and you’re still uncomfortable about how
to do it, watch others who have done it. During
the time of COVID, and since, there have been a
ton of virtual book festivals and author interviews
on podcasts. The field is ripe with low-hanging
author fruit that you can devour. Jump on
YouTube or your favorite podcast provider and
search around. You can watch the authors I
hosted at the "Pages Promotions Virtual Book
Festivals and the Indie Reads TV" program. You
can also listen to my author friend Emma
Palova’s "For The Love of Books" podcast. And
then there’s my author friend Lisa Jacovsky’s "No
Limits" podcast.
Watch and listen to other authors read and
talk about their work. Notice how they do it, and
then mimic the things they do that you enjoy.
Remember, you’re a reader too, so if you enjoy a
particular author’s delivery, chances are, if you
mimic that technique, readers will enjoy your
reading, too. The more they enjoy themselves,
the more likely they are to buy your book, ask for
it at the library, and refer it to others.
