PART V. DECORATIVE KNOTS
AND OTHER ASPECTS
This Part contains four chapters on mankind's uses of knots
for decorative purposes, and as symbols for use in heraldry
or love.
It begins with histories of two decorative knotting crafts
which have been practised, more or less intensively, at vari-
ous times and by various races, during the past five thousand
years. The first chapter traces the history of macrame, or
square-knotting as it is still known by seamen. The second
deals with the story of lace-its manufacture and uses-in
particular dealing with the history of commercially success-
ful lace.
The third chapter briefly outlines the system of European
Heraldry, and then describes the various ways that knots
can be used in heraldry. Details are given of many knots
that have been depicted on elements of armorial bearings.
The final chapter deals with the widely-known and historic
concept of the True Love Knot. The author gives many
examples of occurrence of the concept in literary works, and
diagrams of several actual knot forms it has taken over the
past five hundred years or so.
