Introducing The New
NCH Internal Medicine
Resident Class of 2018
n July 1, 2018 NCH welcomed 12 new
internal medicine resident physicians and 3
chief resident physicians to the NCH family.
O The new residents joined our current
residents in the 3-year NCH Internal Medicine training
program, which started in July 2017, making NCH
Healthcare System a teaching hospital.
This is good news for patients, because as a teaching
hospital, the high quality of care already provided by
NCH gets even better.
“There is a huge culture change that comes with
establishing a residency program and taking more of an Murtaza Ghulam Jeff Howland Sven Oman
academic approach to medicine,” says Charles Graeber, Chief Resident Chief Resident Chief Resident
M.D., the NCH Healthcare System Internal Medicine
Residency Program Manager and former Associate
Program Director for the University of Connecticut
Primary Care Internal Residency. “We are striving for a
higher standard of care.”
Residents, called interns their first year, are doctors
who have their medical degree and are in their first
years of post-graduate, on-the-job training. Under
the direct supervision of an attending physician, they
provide adult patient care, prescribe medication and
perform basic procedures.
With a shortage of internal Courtney Megan

the residency program is Bass Campbell Cheslock
one way to bring doctors striving for
to Collier County who will
hopefully stay after their a higher
three-year program is done.
Over 3,800 applied for the standard
12 positions that began
training this July. of care.
Part of the draw is that
NCH’s program received
accreditation from the Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education and has an academic
affiliation with the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine Chaplin Lauren Mohammed
and Science in Rochester, Minnesota, the country’s top Dixon Graham Khader
healthcare system.
Hospital staff also provide daily and weekly lectures
for not only the residents, but any interested employee.
The NCH residency program curriculum and structure
prompts NCH to take a more collaborative approach to
patient care. With a focus on shared decision-making,
specialists, internal medicine physicians and patients
meet together to discuss treatment plans.
Dr. Graeber says this is an industry trend that results
in higher patient satisfaction and better outcomes.
The NCH Internal Medicine Residency program
provides outpatient care to southwest Florida residents Thien Julio
and visitors, and everyone is invited to take advantage Leslie
of this excellent opportunity. The academic faculty Le Nieto Raymond
supervises resident physicians during the course of the
visit to ensure that everything is covered and nothing is
missed. The extra attention translates to slightly longer
office visits and a very thorough healthcare experience.
The Internal Medicine residents are accepting new
patients in their outpatient medical clinic. This is a
great time to get started, take control of your health,
and establish a healthcare relationship with a resident
physician in the NCH Academic Internal Medicine
program. They are available to care for your chronic
conditions as well as routine and urgent health care
needs. Courtney Michael Tracey
