P. 53
Round 1. Round 1 Addition 1, 5, 2, 7, 8, 4
Have students fill in the boxes for the first two
addition problems. Have the teams compare Sample Answers
their fractions by finding the least common
denominator. The team with the greater 6, 1, 4, 9
fraction wins. Keep the score of each team.
6 1 = 11 4 7 1 = 16 3
Round 2. 9 4 12 2 10
Have students fill in the boxes and solve 8
subtraction for each problem. Tell students to 5
always put the greater number first when
solving subtraction problems (otherwise they ex) 4 + 1 = 7
will get negative answers). Find which team 6 9 9
has the greater fraction.
ex) 4 + 1 = 11
9 6 18
Round 2 Subtraction 1, 7, 9, 3, 6, 2
Sample Answers
1, 3, 7, 9
Add up the scores of each team after all
four problems. Ask the winning team to
explain their strategy.
Refer to . 7 1 4 3 1 2 = 8 3
9 9 7 14
= 9
6
3
ex) 3 1 = 20
7 9 63
ex) 3 1 = 4
9 7 21

Winning Strategy
Round 1.
Remind students that if the denominator is the same, the fraction with a large numerator is greater than a
fraction with a small numerator. So the numerators should be as great as possible.
However, students can only use proper fractions, where the denominator is greater than the numerator.
Round 2.
The first fraction should be the greatest and the second fraction should be the least.
