Activity 1 Measuring with Nonstandard Units
jOb ective Estimate and measure length using nonstandard units.
Material Chips
1. Textbook Instructions Activity 1 Measuring with Nonstandard Units
1. Instruct students to use chips to measure 1 Use chips to measure the lengths of the objects. Chips
objects.
The length of the pencil is about 2 chips. What you need
Use chips in the following way to measure The length of the pencil is about chips.
the lengths of different objects. ae
Line the first chip with the left end of the about 2 chips about 3 chips
object.
Put chips side by side. b about 7 chips
Count how many chips you used. c
After measuring, have students freely discuss d about 4 chips
which lengths were the longest and the about 5 chips
shortest for the 5 objects and explain why. 22
Using chips, let’s measure the following
objects. How long is the eraser? About 2
chips long.
What about the flashlight? About 4 chips
long.
What about the shoe? About 7 chips long.
Can you compare the lengths of the
objects? If so, how? We can compare the
number of chips used to measure the
objects.
Which object is the longest? The shoe,
which is 7 chips long.
2. Build Understanding
Direct and Indirect Comparisons
There are 2 ways to compare the lengths of objects. One is by Direct Comparison. Juxtapose the objects to
see which one is longer. The other way is Indirect Comparison, which is measuring objects using
nonstandard units.
Use Direct Comparison to compare objects you can move around. However, for objects that are fixed in
position like picture frames or for objects that are too large to move around, Indirect Comparison is better.
Direct Comparison Indirect Comparison

the pencil. width.
