CMath Vo abulary unit length: the basic length used to measure objects

2 Measure each object by using different unit lengths. 2. Have students learn that the number of
units required to measure a length will change
If the unit length is long, you need fewer units to measure objects. depending on what unit length is used.
If the unit length is short, you need more units to measure objects.
a Have students measure an object with
various unit lengths.
The length of the book is 4 nails long. Tell them that they will need fewer units to
The length of the book is 3 scissors long. measure a length if they use a larger unit
length and vice versa.
b Have them discuss which unit lengths
were efficient and easy to use.
The length of the picture is 6 erasers long.
The length of the picture is 4 pencils long. 2b. If you use a larger unit length, you will
The length of the picture is 3 sticks long. need fewer units to measure the same length.
If you have a smaller unit length, you will need
3. Animal Race 25 more units to measure the same length.
How many times longer is the width of
the frame than the eraser? 6 times.
What about the pencil? 4 times.
What about the stick? 3 times.
Why are they different? The length of each
object is different.
That’s correct. Which unit length was the
easiest to use? The stick.
Why? It took less number of unit lengths to
measure because the unit length was greater
than the others.

Have students learn that they can express measurements using numerical values 4
when measuring with unit lengths. First, have them count the number of unit lengths, units
and then, write the corresponding numbers to measure the object.

Instruct students to label the corresponding numbers under the gradation on a ruler because it is easier to
read.
