Type 9-2 Rotated Rectangles With Same Area

A cylinder is made by rotating a rectangle with an area of 16 cm2
around one side used as the rotation axis. Find the maximum volume
of the cylinder. Note that the length and width of the rectangle are
whole numbers.

1 Complete the table such that the area of the rectangle is 16 cm2.

Width 1 cm 2 cm
Length 16 cm

2 If the rectangle from 1 is roatated around the rotation axis, then the
body of rotation, the cylinder, will have a height of 16 cm, and the radius
of the base will be 1 cm. Find the volume of each cylinder made by
revolving the rectangles found in 1 .

3 The volume of a cylinder increases as the width of the rectangle that
revolves around the rotation axis increases, when the area of the rectangle
does not change. Find the maximum volume of the cylinder.
