Unit 1 Milgram’s Experiments and the Power of Authority
The experiment revealed that most people have an incredibly
powerful wish to obey authority, even when that means doing something that
they personally feel is wrong. In addition to changing the way psychologists
think about morality and its power over our decisions, the experiment also
changed the way psychology experiments are conducted. After the
experiment was finished, Milgram explained the true purpose of the
experiment to the subjects and told them that they had not really hurt
anyone. Despite this, many of the subjects continued to feel deeply guilty
about their actions and experienced severe emotion stress. Experiments like
this are no longer performed because of the psychological damage they can
cause.
