Unit 2 READING 1

(A) The wonderful inventions of today would not be
possible without the important inventions of
ancient times. Perhaps the greatest of these is
the wheel. Historians believe that the wheel
was invented about seven thousand years ago
in the ancient land of Sumer. (a) Surprisingly, it wasn’t
used for transport at all. (b) The wheel was first used to turn clay to make
rounded pottery. (c) But there is proof that by the 4th millennium B.C., it
was being used to move wagons, in the same way that it is used today. (d)

(B) Of all humans’ early inventions, the one that changed history the most is
the use of fire. After people accidentally discovered fire, they invented ways

to control it and use it for many different purposes. Heat, protection,
and cooking were three of the most important. The fire scared away
predators and helped preserve food much longer.
, having control over fire meant
that people could move to colder climates without freezing.
This allowed people to spread to new parts of the globe.
