There were many distinctions between the nobles and the commoners
in France before the 1800’s. The nobles were granted large land
parcels and enjoyed an extravagant life style; however, the commoners
were forced to pay heavy taxes. The use of incorrect weights and
measurement systems disturbed the order of all transactions. Over
400 different standard rulers were used to measure length. Therefore,
many people used their own measuring methods to deceive and claim
an advantage when they were paying taxes and when buying and
selling goods. These chaotic conditions led to a revolt in 1789 against
the nobility which we now know as the French Revolution.
