The revolutionary government believed that the unification of weights
and measurements was a top priority. Many of the French scholars
who used many different measuring methods believed that they needed
to create a standard measuring system which could be used all over the
world by everyone. So, in 1791, scholars from all over France gathered
and announced ‘the standard unit of measurement as 1/20,000,000 of
the distance between the North pole and the South pole’. They believed
that the distance between the two poles would never change. Thus the
distance between the two poles was measured over the period of
7 years, and the 1/20,000,000 of the measured distance was fixed as a
unit of ‘1 meter’.
