Metric units have been adopted as a benchmark.
1 mm (millimeter)
1 meter equals 1000 millimeters and 1 mm is one of 1000 millimeters.
The word mili means thousandth.

1 cm (centimeter)
1 meter equals 100 centimeters and 1 centimeter is one of 100 centimeters.
The word centi means hundredth.
1 m = 100 cm
1 km (kilometer)
1000 meters equal 1 kilometer. The word kilo means 1000.
