Reading Practice 3
Air Force Drones
For many years, piloting* spy
planes was the most hazardous job in
any air force. The first spy planes were
slow and had to fly low to the ground.
5 This made them easy targets for fighter
planes and guns on the ground. Later
spy planes flew faster and higher, but
piloting them was still a dangerous
job.
10 Now, however, most spy planes are much safer because they are drones.
Drones are either controlled by a computer or controlled by remote*. This makes
them much safer because if the plane is shot down, there is no risk to the pilot. In
addition, drones can fly longer missions than traditional spy planes. This is
because computers do not suffer from exhaustion. Before, spy plane missions had
15 to end when the pilot got tired. Now, spy plane missions sometimes last for more
than 24 hours.
The first drones were not actually spy planes. The first drones were made
for training fighter pilots. Fighter pilots needed practice attacking other planes, but
they could not attack a plane with a real pilot. Drones proved so useful in this role
20 that air forces started looking for other ways to use them. This is how they became
spy planes.
*pilot: to guide an aircraft or ship as its pilot
*remote: a remote control
