Activity 1 Comparing Numbers
jOb ective Compare two numbers.
1. Textbook Instructions Activity 1 Comparing Numbers is greater than
is less than
After writing the number of objects in the 1 Draw to show how many. Compare.
picture, have them compare two numbers.
Fill in the .
1. Have students draw circles to indicate how
many of each object appears in the picture. ab
They can then write down the number of
circles and make pairs to see which object 45 32
appears more often.
5 is greater than 4 . 3 is greater than 2 .
After drawing the circles to show the 4 is less than 5 . 2 is less than 3 .
numbers, have students make pairs. The
group with the remaining number of circles 14
that are not paired up has a larger number.
When expressing comparisons of two
numbers, have students use “more” or
“fewer.” Then have them compare two
numbers using “greater than” or “less than.”
Through question 1, have students
understand that the expression greater than
or less than will change depending on what
you are talking about.
2. Build Understanding
The teacher should first draw 3 butterflies, and then ask students to draw the same number of circles. Next,
have them draw circles to express the previous and the following numbers. Then have students think back
to what they have learned in the previous unit (numbers that come before and after) to explain.
Example: 3 butterflies
fewer 2 number that comes before
more 4 number that comes after
