Activity 4 Decide together: Living and non-living
                                                          connected

                                                                                                Time: 45 minutes
                                         Objectives

By the end of this activity the learners should be able to know and
             Resources understand:
                                         • that living things need non-living things for them to live
             • Connection cards • that animals need a habitat for food, water, a place to shelter,
             • Ball of string or have babies and escape from dangers
               wool.
             • Learner task sheets
                                            Teacher guidelines

This activity is adapted from a widely-used activity generally
referred to as “The web of life game”.
                                           1. Make the following Connection Cards by writing each word
on a card. If there are any unfamiliar objects on the cards,
replace them with more familiar objects or organisms.
                                               Sun Earthworm Dead leaf Snail
Bee Ant Butterfl y Living leaf

                                               Mushroom Spider Flower Owl

                                               Rock River Tree Squirrel
                                               Grass Woodpecker Snake Soil
                                               Mouse Rain Frog Buck

                                               Caterpillar Water Seed Baboon

                                           2. Learners sit in a circle and each one is given a card.
Learners hold up their cards so that everyone can read the
                                              cards they got.

                                           3. The learner with the ‘Tree’ card starts the game off. Holding
onto the end of the string, they toss the ball of string to any
                                              other learner in the circle.

                                           4. The learner who catches the ball tries to explain how the
object on their card interacts with the tree. Anyone in the
group can join in to help out. Examples are: “The earthworm
eats the leaves from the tree” or “The river brings water to
                                              the tree” etc.

                                           5. The learner with the ball of string then keeps hold of the
string and throws the ball to another learner who must then
explain their connection to the thrower’s card. And so on
until every learner has had a chance to catch the string.
