group
• pencil and eraser
• magnifying glasses 2. Hand out the task sheet and take learners outside (or use
(for each learner in a classroom if you have living organisms in your class)
group if possible)
3. Ask learners to look around them, on the ground and identify
ten objects. They can use the magnifying glasses. Have the
learners make a list of what they see in their environment
and indicate whether the object is living, nonliving, was living
but now is dead or not sure on the worksheet. They should
try to find at least one object for each of the first three
categories.
Allocate 30 minutes for this part of the activity.
4. Back in class, draw the table below on the board.
Living Non-living Was living, Not sure
now dead
Ask each of the groups to present three items that they
observed, one from each of the first three categories. Also
ask if there were any items they were unsure of.
5. Once ALL the groups have given feedback, conduct a
discussion.
Ask learners to:
• Look at the table on the board and identify any items that
they think are listed under a wrong heading.
• State where the item should be placed.
• Explain why they think the item belongs under a different
category.
• Continue the discussion for about 10 minutes. You should
reach a consensus on items under each category. Once
you have reached consensus, have the learners do the
following activity as individuals
