            This topic encompasses the CAPS content of ‘Living and Non-
            living things’ and ‘Need for a habitat’.


            The Essential questions for learners in this section are:
            •  What is living?
            •  Why are there ambiguities about what is “life”?
            •  How are living things interconnected?
            •  What do living things need in order to stay alive?

            The activities covered in this section are:

              Key concepts

             •  There are many different kinds of living things
             •  Living plants and animals can carry out all of the seven
                life processes – feeding, growing, reproducing, breathing,
                excreting, sensing, moving
             •  Some things appear not to be living but carry on ‘living’
                given the right conditions
             •  Non-living things cannot carry out all of the seven life
                processes
             •  Some things were living and are now dead
             •  Animals need a habitat for food, water, a place to shelter,
                have babies and escape from dangers
