Strategic Planning for Law Firms
Finding a Consultant Who Understands
Your Type of Firm
Different consultants specialize with different types of firms. Some consultants work mostly with large firms. Some with small firms. Some work with commercial boutique firms. Some with national insurance defense firms. Find the consultant with the expertise relevant for your firm.
Finding a Consultant Who Understands Your Business Model
Different firms have different business models, with varying hourly requirements, hourly rates, staffing, marketing, etc. There is no right and there is no wrong model, as long as the model works for the firm, is profitable and fits the firm’s culture. The consultant has to understand your firm’s model, how it operates, what makes it work and what undermines it.
The Role of an Outside Consultant
An outside consultant serves several roles. They work with the firm’s leadership to survey
and interview the team, study the results, and share and analyze the data. They help define
the main issues to address in a strategic plan, and will head up a firm retreat to discuss and formulate a strategic plan. After the firm agrees to a strategic plan, and reduces it to writing, a consultant can be available to ensure compliance, help with tweaking the plan and help achieve benchmarks.
