COACH DEVELOPMENT & PATHWAYS
2020 was about adapting and advancing for the BWA High Performance Department.
The COIVD shutdown understandably had a huge impact on our ability to coach and play basketball, however it forced coaches to get creative with their own development. The lockdown saw many coaches take to the internet to seek out clinics, video and mentoring to further their own development.
BWA was no different. Our Community Coach course was converted to an online platform. Using video examples and online resources coaches were able
to receive an official accreditation from within their homes. Not only did over 150 coaches jump at this opportunity, but accreditation from every single region followed. The initiative was highly successful leading to the course staying online. The ability for regions to access education material that was previously inaccessible was a big turning point for our organisation.
The BWA Coaches Facebook page received record high engagement with daily drills, articles and videos. The followers ballooned to 1570 for the first time.
BWA’s partnership with the Perth Lynx allowed us to use the athletes under lockdown exemptions to film and produce content for our stakeholders. The most popular videos included the ‘Whitcomb 5 Point Shooting Drill’, ‘Burrows Wall Ball Handling’ and ‘Rosie Deegan Finishing Warmup’. Countless other content was created and shared from newsletters, mini clinics and outside education material.
Our high-performance program athletes all received direct video workouts and a full 2-month program. The drills and exercises were filmed and uploaded to a private YouTube channel for athletes to access.
Our regional visits were slowed down due to travel restrictions, but we were still able to get out to remote areas like Moora and Narrogin before we closed up shop. BWA’s link with schools expanded into delivering Community and Club courses in over five schools.
The domestic coaching guide was also released to the general public. The guide shows a breakdown of the Fantastic 5 of skill development. The book provides valuable resources and breakdowns for coaches putting their hands up for the first time. The WABL coaches guide follows this resource in 2021.
