What a fantastic year it was in basketball for the Midwest and Gascoyne! We saw many people working very hard to get basketball back on track from the head office at BWA to the coal face in our region.
After a tumultuous start to 2020 The Midwest displayed the passion people have for the sport of basketball. We may have had to cancel a few programs and start a few later than normal but when the all-clear came from the government everything was in place and ready to go! And did we hit the ground running!
MIDWEST BASKETBALL
Our Midwest Basketball Academy was the first program we ran after the lock down and it proved to be a huge success with exactly 100 athletes participating in the eight-week intense training program. We had over 20 coaches involved at different stages of the Academy.
The Midwest and GABA sent 13 teams to compete in
the 2020 BWA State Championships. Six of those teams represented the Midwest in the inaugural BWA State Titles. All our teams were very competitive. Our coaches and athletes can hold their heads high knowing that they gave it their all and played the game in the right spirit.
Due to the lock down in February the GABA could only send six of their 12 teams down to Perth to compete at Country Champs. All teams battled hard with the U13 Boys making it all the way to the Grand Final.
Dongara had three of their five teams represent at Country Champs and all of them played super hard!
A special thanks to our Midwest referee’s that made the effort to go down and umpire in Perth during State Champs and Country Champs. Some great young referees coming up through the ranks.
Sporting School’s clinics were a huge success in the Midwest with 55 school clinics delivered in a space of four months reaching over 1300 athletes! Carnamah, Mingenew, Chapman Valley, Allendale, Kalbarri, Perenjori, Northampton and other schools in the Geraldton area all received visits from our Regional Development officer in 2020.
