RECORD NUMBERS EVERYWHERE
2022 demonstrated a fantastic turnout for all our Midwest/Gascoyne programs this year. Record numbers everywhere you look.
WHAT KID’S SAY ABOUT HOOPS!
Dan Hunt conducted a survey, asking athletes in the program what they love about basketball.
WHY DO YOU PLAY BASKETBALL?
Tully-I love it and enjoy it. Having fun with my friends and being competitive.
Hunter-Play with my friends and work as a team. I don’t really like single sports. I like team sports.
Lara-Safe way to get my anger out. Sahba-It’s the sport I love most to
play!
Trevor-I love it and I want to put the hard work to make it.
Liv-It brings me joy and it lets me reach new highs. Basketball brings out new skills that I use in my everyday life that I didn’t know I had.
Lincoln-When I play, I feel relaxed and happy. Basketball is the most “Godly” sport in the world.
Addison-I love playing a team sport. It makes me happy playing with lots of different people.
Denbi-It’s what I want to do in the future, and I love it!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BASKETBALL?
Taylor-The people there treat me like I can do anything.
Lara-Feels like home. Tully-Competing against other
players.
Trevor-My self-achievement. Denbi-Defence.
Liv-Meeting new people and creating new friendships with people that have things in common with me.
Lincoln-I’ve met so many friends through basketball. I feel alive on the court. I feel like I’m my best self out on the court.
Addison-The game is fun. It includes boys and girls in sport. I like being involved with the older players, they are all so helpful and fun.
Sahba-I love the relationships that I have formed, and basketball helps me cope with things.
BASKETBALL:
Shoes screeching on the floorboards
Balls bouncing on the ground Kids drinking Powerade Parents yelling “FOUL”
The ball is like a full moon, everyone is looking for it
The coach is screaming, whistles blow
I go to the line to take a shot
It goes up, around and in, SCORE!
The smell of stinky body odour Sweat dripping on the floor
People arguing with the umpires
Players getting fouled
When you have the ball, you are the centre of attention
You put all your sweat and tears into what you love
Getting told how well you are playing
Practicing all the time, every day and night
The ball is like a 100 dollar note, who is going to get it first?
Scoreboard changing number by number
Time is slowing ticking down
Until the game is finished, and the winners take home the crown.

January is traditionally a quiet time at the basketball stadium. This January we had over 1000 juniors hard at it in holiday camps or Rep team trainings.
The extension to the basketball stadium in Geraldton has surpassed all expectations. It is aesthetically pleasing and extremely practical for all our basketball needs. We won’t know the impact the new build will have participation wise until next year when the statistics are in, but I dare say it will be an eye opener for sure. Congrats to all involved.
Enough from me!
Check out what the kids have to say about hoops.
