 REPORT
2019 has been a real year of
HIGH PERFORMANCE &
PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT
2019 saw a changeover in role in the coach education space. Luke Brennan took an offer with the Perth Wildcats as an assistant coach. Keegan Crawford stepped in and competed the year of 2019 running coach education. In 2019 Basketball WA ran over 30 coaching courses all across the state in the calendar year. Regionally, BWA’s Development Officers have been empowered to roll out their own Community Courses. This has seen Community Coach Courses run in Albany, Karratha, Mid- west, Peel & the South West.
This year saw the continued delivery of the U12’s Hotshots Skill Days. Hotshots is the first step on the BWA development pathway. Hotshots engages athletes in fun skill-based drills and small sided competition. Hotshots was delivered in both metropolitan and country regions across the state. 2019 saw the participation of over 200 athletes in the program. Regions from all across the state assisted in the facilitation of the Hot- shots Skill days.
Our Pathway programs continue to be enhanced from the Future Development program through to the State and National Performance programs volunteer and club coaches assist our staff in the delivery of these programs and we thank all those involved in helping out young athletes develop.
ASSOCIATION DEVELOPMENT
Basketball WA has been providing information and resources including step-by-step guides
to assist incorporated associations through
this transition period. Associations and Clubs ensured their constitutions were amended to meet the new legislative standards of the Associations Incorporations Act by July 1st 2019
consolidation for Basketball WA on many of our strategic fronts.
PARTICIPATION
We have continued our consolidation of our regional delivery and partnering with our local associations to have a development officers in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Midwest, Southwest and Great Southern and we are continuing to find ways to finalise our expansion into the other areas as well. Providing the on-ground support for development has seen regional participation numbers expand to just under 20,000 members.
In the metropolitan areas we have seen continued expansion of numbers to be current above 30,000 participants across the 12 Metropolitan associations. These numbers don’t include our Come and Try, Aussie Hoops or schools programs which would include thousands more buddying basketball players. We now have 75 affiliated association across the state with over 50,000 registered players.
Our school programs and Aussie Hoops community programs have gone from strength to strength and it is great to see more schools getting involved and participating in our school slam series. In addition, we now have agreements with School Sport WA and the Private Schools Association and are working collaboratively to grow and enhance school based sports programs.
Our reach and impact on the local community continues to grow through our 3X3 basketball, soon to be an Olympic and Commonwealth Games sport the modified version of the game has real street appeal and is gaining a following and momentum. Mobile courts, local venues and iconic locations all come to life under this model and the future looks very bright for 3X3.
