How to Help Wildlife this Winter
By rusty anD max VanDuzer
Slow down! We’ve seen so much wildlife in our yard this year: bobcats, ermine weasels, foxes, rabbits, turkeys, squirrels and more! Animals crossroads while they are looking for food. Sadly, we’ve seen quite a few animals get hit on our road this winter. Slow down and be aware as you drive! Leave brush piles. This provides shelter for small rodents like mice and moles. It also provides a hunting area for barred owls. It’s important to leave brush piles alone until May because bumble bees and other beneficial insects burrow in here to spend the winter and come out once it’s warm enough.
Put out bird feeders. If you don’t have a bird feeder, you can
make one by freezing chopped fruit and birdseed in water in a bundt pan or popsicle molds, and then hanging it from a tree. An- other good bird feeder is rolling pinecones in peanut butter and then in birdseed. Enjoy the New
Hampshire wildlife from a safe distance!

HEBRON —It can be hard to see wildlife as winter weather takes over, and animal tracks are a great way to find out what they’re up to. Join New- found Lake Region Association (NLRA) Education & Outreach Manager Mirka
Zapletal for an in-
troduction to ani-
mal track and sign identification at the
Hebron Town For-
est on Thursday,
March 6th, at 9:30
am. Many wildlife
species spend a lot
of time trying not
to be seen, but they
do leave behind clues about what they are doing and how they are doing it. Animal tracks and sign can tell us who was there, how they were using the space, and even what they were eating. Par- ticipants will get an introduction to tracks and gaits of local wild- life, learning which characteris- tics to cue in on. The event will
finish with a short hike to look for recent animal tracks and sign. Register online at Newfound- Lake.org/events or call 603-744- 8689.
The Newfound Lake Region Association is committed to pro- tecting Newfound Lake and its water- shed through educa- tion, programs, and collaboration that promote conserva- tion and preserva- tion of the region’s natural, social, and economic resources. Through water quality and invasive species monitoring, educational events such as guided hikes and nature activities, and land con- servation efforts that protect open spaces and help manage stormwater pollution, NLRA approaches conservation at the watershed level.
