Last year, Paul Smith Elemen- tary and Franklin Middle School participated in the Day of Car- ing, and this was the high school’s first year. Jamie Walters, Frank- lin’s School Climate Specialist, detailed that the student volun- teers went around the commu- nity to get their hands dirty and help out. Students went to Arch- ways, Peabody Place, CATCH Housing, Griffin Beach, Odell Park, and the Franklin Opera House to lend a helping hand to the places that make their com- munity what it is. “Everyone was having a great time,” Walters said. “The student volunteers definitely felt a sense of pride and accomplishment.” Activities involved outdoor work, meeting residents, gardening, clean-up,
painting, and so much more. Franklin High’s principal David Levesque said, “GUW’s Youth Day of Caring is de- signed to go a little further with the community’s youth and re- ally roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty.” Patrick Tufts, Granite United Way’s president, came and talked to the students the morning of and described the importance of volunteering and the positive impacts it brings. “His talk really gave the rest of the day a positive vibe,” Walters said.
Granite United Way also as- sisted the students in their vol- unteer efforts by bringing them supplies for what they needed. There were also multiple differ- ent organizations involved that helped them find activities and get them more supplies. So there was certainly no lack of commu- nity involvement on this eventful
