Granite United Way’s mis- sion is to improve the quality of people’s lives by bringing together the caring power of communities. So when Franklin High School’s principal, David Levesque, worked at Pleasant Street School and participated in GUW’s Youth Day of Caring, he jumped at the opportunity to bring it here to Franklin. GUW’s Youth Day of Caring aims to give the younger generation an opportunity to give back and make a positive impact by volun- teering in their community. On April 21st, Paul Smith Elemen- tary had 275 students volunteer, and Franklin Middle School had 375. On Friday, May 5th, FHS had about 50-60 self-selected vol- unteers to get out into their small

Franklin Falls Dam:
A Deep History That Flows to the Present

The people of Franklin are well-acquainted with the beautiful sight of the Franklin Falls Dam. It certainly does quite a bit for the community with its flood protection pur- pose, and the history behind it is truly remarkable.
The Franklin Falls Dam is located on the Pemigewasset River, which joins the Win- nipesaukee River about three miles downstream to form the Merrimack River. So many rivers! In November of 1939, construction on the Franklin Falls Dam began in order to prevent flood damage to the communities that sit along the Merrimack River. In Octo- ber of 1943, the construction was completed at $7.9 mil- lion. And as of September of 2011, the Franklin Falls Dam has prevented $178.3 million in flood damages since it was built.
The process of building the dam was exceedingly in- depth and took tremendous
efforts by the Army Corps of Engineers. The operation in- volved relocating a cemetery
