Woods Waters and Wildlife Of Monarchs and Hiking
By Jeff BeaCh
Hopefully the black flies have abated by the time this goes to print. Now we can get out to our favorite kayak paddles and a few trails into our rugged NH woods. I just recently hiked up to Goose pond off the West shore of New- found lake. Probably more of a walk in the woods than a hike. The pond at the base of Little Sugarloaf is a local natural trea- sure. (Beautiful mixed hardwood forest leading to a quintessential NH pond. We happened luckily to catch a glimpse of the Great Crested Fly catcher darting over the pond for his lunch. As com- mon as they are I’ve only seen them around back woods forest ponds in NH) June is the perfect month to find a favorite trail to hike again or start a new trail list and get your hiking boots on. Most towns have a town for- est or at least a local woods that are easy walks to start on. Then branch out to one of our majestic NH mountains. Be prepared and in good physical shape for all of the more strenuous hikes and a better plan would be to work up gradually at the shorter moderate trails then graduate to the more difficult terrain paths. Some sur- vival gear like a knife, some rope, a poncho and a compass even in the middle of Summer is on the top of the list of preparedness.
Plan your trip with a map and let others know, even if scribbled on the back of your car regis- tration, where your adventure is taking you. For those adventurers that need a little help with a map and compass we will host a class at Slim Baker Lodge on the 10th
of this month.
One of the most fascinating
natural wonders of creation is the migration of Humming- birds and Monarch butterflies. The Hummingbirds around our house returned in early May from their cross the border journey from Mexico or Central Amer- ica. Every year they leave NH in mid - late September and travel South to their Winter homes in central Mexico. Even knowing to use tail winds to reduce energy use on their journey. Then in the Spring they return to their Sum- mer home in NH with the males returning a couple weeks earlier than females. What an incredible feat of bird intelligence
The Monarch butterfly returns to NH in June from Mexico. Now get this. The NH Audubon Soci- ety (NHAS) has set up a program
to track the Monarch Butterfly, also called the wanderer, on its yearly pilgrimage. NHF&G Nongame program has supported the NHAS data collection.
They have set up these data collecting towers across New En- gland to capture data from the butterflies which have been fit- ted with tracking devices as they fly by. The Monarch butterflies favorite food is nectar. And the milkweed plant is a host plant for the Monarch to lay eggs and the larvae to feed on the leaves as they emerge. A biological re- quirement. Try planting some milkweed in a sunny area of your property to keep areas available to support the growth of this but- terfly population. In the State of NH they are listed as a species of greatest conservation need.
It is quite amazing and won-
derful how God has created a program in the micro mini cells that contain the DNA that guides the Hummers and Monarchs to set up a summer camp in NH for breeding then fly to their Winter
landsandreturntotheverysame area the next Spring. Uniquely designed internal biological cal- endar. And He has created multi-
