Get Involved with NLRA This June at Grey Rocks
The Newfound Lake Region Association (NLRA) is offer- ing several ways for people to get involved in local conserva- tion this June. Whether you're a long-time volunteer, a nature enthusiast, or simply someone looking to spend time outdoors with others, NLRA’s programs at Grey Rocks Conservation Area in Hebron are open to all and aim to connect people with the land and with each other.
The month begins with the Volunteer Cookout on June 6 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Held at Grey Rocks, this event is NL- RA’s way of saying thank you to the volunteers who help support their conservation work—and an invitation to anyone inter-
ested in learning more. It’s a relaxed setting to meet staff, trustees, and fellow community members while enjoying a meal and hearing about upcoming projects. Whether you’ve been involved for years or are just curious about how to help, the cookout is a good op- portunity to ask questions, make connections, and see how your time and skills can make a difference.
NLRA’s Volunteer Day follows on June 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and offers a hands-on way to support con- servation efforts. Tasks vary de- pending on the season’s needs, but typically include planting pollinator-friendly plants, clear-
ing walking trails, and working along the shoreline to reduce erosion and improve habitat. No prior experience is required. NLRA staff will be on hand
with tools, supplies, and guidance, making this a good activity for individ- uals, families, or small groups. It’s also a great way to enjoy the outdoors while contributing to
the health of the Newfound wa- tershed.
On June 14 from 8 to 10 a.m., nature lovers can take part in a Guided Birding Walk with NH Audubon at Grey Rocks. Partic- ipants will learn how to identify
birds by sight and sound, from year-round residents to migrating species passing through the area. The walk covers up to two miles of terrain and offers a chance
to learn more about New Hampshire’s bird conservation efforts. Anyone with an interest in birds—whether you’re an ex- perienced birder or just starting out—is welcome.
For families, the Nature Sta- tion will be open on June 17 and
again on June 21 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with the program “We’re Ready to Bug You!” This drop-in session is designed to in- troduce kids (and adults) to the important roles insects play in the environment. Activities will include identifying insects in the area and building a bug hotel to bring home. It’s a hands-on, cre- ative way to learn about the tiny creatures that pollinate plants, break down waste, and support the food chain. No registration is required, and the program is free.
On June 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., NLRA will host the Newfound Watershed Hike. The exact location will be an- nounced soon, but the hike will feature a guided exploration of the local landscape, with time to observe plants, wildlife, and water features. Participants will also learn how NLRA works to protect these natural resources. The hike is open to all and free to attend, but pets should be left at home.
All events take place at Grey Rocks Conservation Area, 178 North Shore Road, Hebron, NH, unless otherwise noted. For more details or to sign up, visit newfoundlake.org.
With a full schedule of events, June is the perfect time to get involved, give back, and learn more about protecting New- found Lake and the surrounding watershed.
