Story Walk NLRA
HEBRON – Newfound Lake Region Association invites you to get outside and read! Join us at Grey Rocks Conservation Area from August 25 through October 1 as StoryWalk® returns with “Bear Came Along,” written by Richard T. Morris and illustrated by LeUyen Pham. “Bear Came Along” follows the journey of Bear and his growing band of friends as they have a big adven- ture on the River. As visitors walk the Floodplain Loop Trail, the story moves downstream, and the animal adventurers learn how they are connected to each other and the larger community. ®
visitors can enjoy more trails with scenic views of the Cockermouth River and Hebron Marsh, un- pack a picnic in the picnic area, throw in a line at the fishing al- coves, or even launch a kayak or canoe at the non-motorized boat launch. NLRA maintains Grey Rocks Conservation Area as a place for people and wildlife alike. Wildlife is abundant, with bald eagles, tadpoles, turtles, and loons being a common sight. NLRA has carefully transformed the once-barren landscape into an array of natural gardens, providing color from both the flowers and the butterflies that frequent them.
The “Bear Came Along” Sto- ryWalk®, along with other fam- ily programs and events, is part of NLRA’s initiative to encour- age residents and visitors to enjoy the natural beauty around them, learn more about the environ- ment and how to protect it, and fall in love with the Newfound Watershed. By connecting the people of Newfound to the won- ders around them, NLRA works to inspire the next generation of stewards and fulfill the mission of protecting Newfound Lake and its watershed. The Pease Public Library, in partnership with the Plymouth Historical Society, will host Mi- chael Tougias and his lecture “Thirteen Days in October: The Untold Cuban Missile Crisis Story” on Wednesday, Septem- ber 13, at 7 p.m.
At the height of the Cold War, two things saved humanity: the strategic wisdom of John F. Kennedy and the U2 aerial spy
program. Based on declassified intelligence and interviews with the pilots, Michael Tougias and co-author Casey Sherman’s book Above & Beyond: John F. Kennedy and America’s Most Dangerous Cold War Spy Mis- sion grounds this conversation about presidential decision-mak- ing, nuclear containment, intel- ligence-gathering, and public information. It’s a timely topic
given today’s concerns about the United States, North Korea, and Iran. Tougias gives special em- phasis to the U-2 pilots who flew unarmed over Cuba to secure photographic proof that the So- viets were installing nuclear mis- siles on the Island.
