Unlocking Income from our Old Farmhouse
 By alexanDRa DeRtouzos Real estate
Back in 1982, my family pur- chased an old, charming cape- style farmhouse on a few acres near Ragged Mountain for our family vacations. Built 120 years earlier, it was rough around the edges, with low ceilings, cracked walls, and a noticeable sag to- wards the center where the old hearth once stood. Teenagers at the time, my brother and I were honestly a little spooked by the place.
Without delay, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work on renovations. Our parents sent us down into the old dirt-floored cellar to clear out a century's worth of clutter. In about a year’s time we reconfigured rooms, added a bathroom, built
dormers, crafted a new hearth, installed multiple fireplaces, and even modernized the kitchen.
Now, 44 years later, the farm- house holds the same warmth we created during those reno- vations. After my father passed away, my mother cherished it for a couple decades as her personal retreat, adding her own touches along the way. We've built count- less treasured memories there as a family. However, as my mother grew older, caring for the house became too much, so I took over a couple of years ago.
I wanted my friends and fu- ture generations to enjoy this sweet getaway near the ski mountain, so I decided to turn it into a short-term vacation rental. The first year was a bit slow, but now it’s thriving. Ini-
tially listed on VRBO alone, I found greater success when I also posted it on Airbnb—now it's getting glowing reviews and returning guests.
If you find yourself in a sim-
ilar situation but aren’t ready to sell a property, consider short or long-term rentals. Vacation rentals are a fantastic way to keep a home furnished and still enjoy it whenever you want. If
you live out of state and don’t need to use it often, long-term rentals can be a great option too. You might discover that your home can be a wonderful source of income!
