“It’s got to be those crazy chemicals in the smoke. I can’t think of
anything else that would have created such a mesmeric setting.”
But now Delta Company was finding itself rolling blindly more and
more as dark was setting in.

              Listen: Evening -
             Moving to Kuwait

“Delta Company, Delta Company this is Delta 6 Actual. Gents we’re
going to bring movement to a close this evening. Find a good spot and let’s
shut the vehicles down. Platoon Commanders take control of your assets and
let’s make sure we’re in a good Company Screen Line. Gunner’s check your
fields of fire. Vehicle commanders let’s do a good sweep with thermals and
report. Scout team leaders set the rotating watch. Gunners let’s stay on
those gun sights and pan your area for bad guys. Remember Delta, nobody
fires without permission; and that permission is granted by me only. Again,
zero accidental discharge. I don’t want to see one accidental discharge this
evening. Conduct light discipline as well as noise discipline.”
                 “Delta One Copy.”
                 “Delta Two Copy.”
“Be advised Gents, nobody moves around this evening as we are
making comms with Ripper and 3rd Tanks and letting them know right where
we are. You start moving and we could create a blue on blue incident; so,
stay put! Again, get set and stay there.”
“TOWs let’s get those hammerheads up and get some eyes
          downrange.”
“Roger that Delta 6, we’re on it.”
“Delta 6, Delta 6 this is Delta 5, I’m coming over to your POS. I’ll be
approaching your four o’clock on foot. Check your fire.”
“Roger that Delta 5. Make your way. We’ll pick you up on NVGs. I
copy, you are coming in at my four o’clock on foot.”
1stLt Scott Williams said, “I’ve got a little surprise for you.”
“How tall is she…and is she cute?”
The net lit up with the sounds of typical Marine humor in response
          to Rock’s remarks.
The night wore on. There was no way on earth I was going to catch
any shut-eye this night. I didn’t even feel tired. I just kept listening to the
chatter on the net. I was sitting up on top of the logistics vehicle with one of
the comm helmet extensions. I had my M16A2 service rifle with me and
every now and then I would take the helmet off and just listen. I had a pair of
