“Gunny!!! Come here Gunny!! We’re here! It’s Kuwait City.“
Gunny came running from the back of the vehicle and came beside
me. He had his 9mm drawn. We looked at each other. I stood up and said,
“Let’s get some binos and get on top of the vehicle and check it out.” We did.
Now, together, we were standing on top of the logistics vehicle with a much
better view of reality. We were in shock in a good way, we had made it to
the outskirts of Kuwait City. Together Gunny and I scanned the city.

            Listen: 2/27 – 7am Listen: On the
Waiting on a FARP Outskirts of Kuwait

“Delta Company, Delta Company this is Delta 6. Platoon
Commanders stand your people to, stand by to stand by. Gentlemen, we are
obviously on the outskirts of Kuwait City. Prepare for contact. Let’s get every
eye downrange. Gunners pan your fields of fire. Be advised Gents surely we
will start to see enemy combatants moving, let’s consider them POWs. If
they are on foot nobody shoots. Nobody shoots unless I give the order to
          shoot. Is that clear Delta?”
                 “Delta One Copy.”
                 “Delta Two Copy.”
Peering downrange, I began a systematic search of everything –
starting in my close vicinity, working my way out to a panoramic sweep,
finally I could see the buildings and the streets. People in the city were
moving about, there were soldiers, trucks, and cars whizzing about
frantically, throughout the city. At that moment I could not tell if they were
enemy combatants or friendlies… some of the trucks were military, some
were civilian trucks and cars. As the sun began to reveal the day, a lot of the
activity in the sector of the city I was observing waned and faded into the
deeper depths of Kuwait. Finally, the place looked like a ghost town with no
activity. Gunny and I were sitting near Delta 5, 1stLt Williams’ vehicle, the
line of Delta Company at that point was staggered as vehicles in the night
stopped in somewhat of a slightly disorganized screen-line.
“Delta Company, Delta Company this is Delta 6. Radio check, over.
Platoon Commanders, starting with 1st Platoon sound off. Get those comms
up gentlemen, let’s get accountability, let’s do a headcount.”
“Delta 6, Delta 6, this is Delta One. Radio Check over.”
                 “Roger Delta One. Lima Charlie.”
On and on down the line each LAV-25 and support variant completed
          the radio checks as requested.
