“I don’t know Witcher. I’m ready to drive into the city and kick some
ass. We’ve come this far, let's get it on. Let’s finish this!”
In the distance to my left, two Marines were observed. They had two
prisoners of war with them. Obliviously these two had surrendered to Delta’s
line. The Marines were marching them straight to our vehicle. Surely seeking
answers of what to do with these two POWs. Gunny and I intercepted them
about 20 feet from our vehicle.
One of the Marines, Scout Team Leader Cpl Bill Covington
said, “Hey gunny, what are we going to do with these POWs? Do you want us
to march them south?”
“No, set them over there about 30 feet away, in front of my vehicle.
We may have more surrender, so let’s just make this the spot that we bring
them to for the moment. Have you cleared them of weapons?”
“We’ve already searched them. They’re clear.”
“OK then. March them over there and sit them down. I’ll have Lt
Abdul come over and interrogate them.”
“Roger that Gunny.”
And with that said, Covington turned to the two POWs and said,
“Move out you assholes. Get your ass over there and sit the fuck down. And
don’t move.” And with a gesture of a butt stroke, Covington ushered them
along, and they followed his commands.
The two Marines set the POWs down and walked away. Gunny and I
just stood there looking at the two. Both of the POWs were looking at us and
began to motion for food and water in the universal sign manner, simulating
putting food in his mouth and drinking out of a cup for water.
“Should I get them some food and water Gunny?”
“Sure. Give them each an MRE and a bottle of water.”
“OK Gunny, I’ll do it. But when I go over there, I’m going to search
them as well.”
One of the prisoners had a rucksack and I wanted to see what was in
there. I went to the LAV and grabbed two MREs and waters. I walked over to
the first one with the rucksack, with food and water in hand. I sat the MREs
and waters down beside me and told him to stand up and hand me his
rucksack. I sat the rucksack behind me and patted him down. He had an Iraqi
