We had handed food and water to these two starving and very thirsty POWs. Later, I tried to
lift this one’s spirits with a girlie magazine. After a while, the fun was over, and he began
sobbing after a few questions about Saddam Hussain. The feeling of defeat for him was
overwhelming. Lt Abdul finally came over and began to question the two troops.
I stood up and looked around. My Marine buddy said, “get back
down and take the picture.” So, I did. After the picture was taken, I grabbed
my camera back and ran over to Gunny. Gunny was standing with a pair of
binos next to the logistics vehicle. Excitedly I started tapping Gunny on the
shoulder.
“What do you want, Witcher?”
“Look over there at that POW. That jackass is reading that porno
mag upside down and backward. I tried to flip it the right way, and he told
me no…and flipped it wrong again.
“How in the hell did he get that magazine?”
“I gave it to him!”
“ Why in the hell did you do that? Go take it away from him!”
“OK.”
So, I trotted back over and took the magazine from him. Yet I wanted
to know more so I sat down and started asking him some questions, even
though we could not speak the same language, I said my words very slowly.
I asked him, “what do you think of Saddam Hussain?”
“No. No good.” In that same statement, the POW began to cry and
sob.
Listen: POW says
Saddam no good
