So, I stood up and looked at the man as he wept in defeat. Lt Abdul
was making his way over and I saw him out of the corner of my eye. Now the
Kuwaiti Lt was with me and the POW who was now sobbing.
                 “Why is he crying?”
I told Lt Abdul, “I asked him what he thought of Saddam Hussain. He
told me, “No. Saddam no good.” And then started this.”
Lt Abdul looked at the crying prisoner and began a tirade,
apparently ordering him to his feet and to stop crying. Now there were
several Marines standing close, Lt Abdul began harshly questioning the
prisoner. It was time for me to leave this matter to Lt Abdul and his
          entourage.
As I walked back to the logistics vehicle, the Marine that brought me
the magazine reappeared. Hey Witcher, that was some crazy shit! I saw you
flip that magazine back and he flipped it back upside down. That was the
funniest thing I’d ever seen. “Right. Yeah, just nuts man. I’ve never seen
anything like it. What a crazy world.” I handed the magazine back to my
fellow Marine as we chuckled together.
Enough of this nonsense. Now it was a burning question… “What in
the hell is going on here? Why are we not attacking the city, the job we came
to do?” As the sun rose in the mid-morning sky, I needed an answer. I’m sure
the rest of Delta Company did as well. Earlier in the morning, I had observed
the activity in the city, which now had all but diminished. Gunny began to
walk over in the direction of “Missile Magnet”, 1stLt Scott Williams’ Hogg
and I trotted over to intercept him.
                 “Gunny, where you headed?”
“I’m headed to the 1stLt’s vehicle. I’m going to see what the fuck is
going on here and why we are not engaging the enemy. Standby Witcher, I’ll
get back to you.” And Gunny, in a stern leaned-in walk did just that and
          headed towards Missile Magnet.
Gunny turned around and pointed at our logistics vehicle and said,
“Witcher, stay the hell next to the vehicle and watch those prisoners. Who
knows what’s about to happen. Just be ready.”
On Missile Magnet, Cpl Fred Battley was observing activity through
his binoculars. “Hey Luminant, those fuckers are popping up out of the sewer
manhole covers and looking at us. They could be snipers.”
And 1stLt Williams replied, “Well, what do you want me to do about
          it?”
“I’m going to go lob some grenades down those manholes.”
“Take a Marine with you, and don’t blow yourself up.”
So, with that, Fred Battley grabbed Anthony Gonder and went on a
mission to stop the pop-up Iraqis from their peep show on Delta. Running
