like hell, those two were taking action against the unknown. Fred Battley
running with a squad automatic weapon and Gonder hot on his heels, went
from manhole to manhole popping the lids off and dropping M60 hand
grenades into the sewer system.
On the third drop, Delta 6 comes over the net, “Hey Delta 5, are you
observing what appears to be your vehicle Commander and your driver?
Though humorous to watch, I’m going to call quits on this… and you need to
get your Marines back on board your vehicle.”
“Roger that Delta 6. Battley has the handheld radio, I’ll call him in.”
“Echo4 Battley, Delta 6 is calling off your grenade attack. You and Gonder get
back over here to the Hogg.”
“But we are in imminent danger.” And Battley and the XO laughed.
Delta Marines observed Battley and Gonder running full speed back
to Missile Magnet. This was the second time Fred Battley had made enemy
contact on a personal level. Fred Battley was truly an aggressive Marine and
operated (in my opinion) far above his rank.
