understand…but the quick, intelligent Kuwaiti officer would turn to Captain
Pollard and hastily speak the answers. Answers to questions like Why are you
surrendering? How many more are in front of us that want to surrender? Do
you have any weapons on you? How long has it been since you have eaten
and drank water? As the answers were given Captain Pollard nodded
acknowledging the answers.
Rock then threw a case of water and a case of MREs off American
Hero and told the Kuwaiti interpreter to tell the prisoners to march south…
“And damn sure be waving those white flags.” Rock then turned to his
Marines that were conducting 5 Ss and a T and said, “Stand ‘em up War
dogs. Push them back away from the vehicles. Start waving them south.”
Rock further instructed the Kuwaiti interpreter to “get ‘em moving.” Several
of the captured prisoners grabbed the hand of the Kuwaiti officer, Lt Abdul,
went to their knees and kissed his hand as if to say Thank you for allowing us
to live. Several of the prisoners did this till finally the officer drew his pistol
and backed them away. The prisoners bowed their heads to him and moved
back and shouted many praises and showings of gratitude with hand
gestures. We all looked at each other and grinned and said, “What the
hell!?” But one thing is for certain we knew that this group and surely the
ones in the vicinity were giving up. And that was a good thing to observe.
“Mount up!!!” bellowed the Skipper, “Let’s go War dogs. We’ve got
other places to be.”
Delta Marines hastily began to clamber back on board their
respective vehicle. Within moments the three LAV-25s turned to the right,
away from the group of prisoners and reentered the formation of Delta.
Gunny and I turned and began to trot back over to our Logistics Vehicle.
Quickly mounting up, stowing our gear, and we too turned and resumed our
position in the Company formation. As Captain Pollard ordered over the net,
“forward march!” Delta Company was once again rolling north to seek and
destroy those that chose not to surrender. As we rolled on, I looked to the
left to see two troops now carrying the cases of water and MREs on their
shoulders, a gift to the group from the Captain, as they walked south, and for
Delta… never to be seen again.
