It was an absolute daring mission. Scott had stopped the possible surprise
attack from RPG anti-tank weapons that were present in the bunker. As the
1stLt exited the bunker Fred Battley threw a hand grenade through the door
and both men fled quickly from the impending blast. Within seconds the
grenade detonated and blew the roof up in the air…coming down it
collapsed, leaving a gaping hole in the desert floor….
Captain Pollard observing the dangerous mission yelled to the 1stLt,
“Dammit Scott….I’ve got scouts to clear those bunkers!!! You two are the last
two that need to be out there clearing bunkers. We can’t afford to lose you!!
          Get back on your vehicle.”
Scott raised his hands up to his side in a questioning manner and
yelled back, “Sir, we were in imminent danger!!”
Rock waived his hand, directing 1stLt Williams and Cpl Battley to get
back on their vehicle. Yet you could see Rock was amused, and Scott again
raised his arms in a “yeah, I’m the man” manner, grinning from ear to ear.
          And the bunker was quiet.
Later it was determined that 1stLt Scott Williams of Delta Company
was the only USMC officer to obtain three kills at close quarters with a
Barretta 9mm service pistol in Desert Storm. Not to mention exposing
himself to enemy fire and charging blindly into an enemy bunker to end a
high-level threat to Marines in the vicinity. It is this extraordinary type of
courage and Esprit de corps that 1stLt Williams carried forward from the
battle of OP4 throughout the entire Invasion into Kuwait City. I will say it
once, I will say it one million times…. Scott Williams was indispensable on the
battlefield. Scott Williams simply saved Marines’ lives repeatedly…. PERIOD!
“Delta 5, are you saddled back up?!”
1stLt Williams was heard chuckling over the net due to his recent
local victory, “Roger Delta 6, we’re ready to roll.”
“Roger. All Delta elements be advised we will make a twelve-degree
NE adjustment on my mark in two clicks. All Delta elements let’s roll. When
we make this turn, we are going to form an echelon right for approximately
one click, develop into a Company Screen Line for a bit and revert back to
          the Company Wedge.”
All these movements took about an hour and a half to complete
under the direction of perhaps one of the greatest tacticians of all time.
Captain Roger “Rock” Pollard had created a swan song of movement with
vehicles stretched out a quarter of a mile. Delta Company had shifted
twelve-degrees NE and the charge north had been shifted approximately a
mile and a half to the right, and now resumed the original northern heading.
We were right where Battalion needed us to be.
