PURPOSE
To see that even a job as big as building Rome can be broken down so that it does not seem so large as to overwhelm to a point where people are so daunted they can’t even start or turn to negativity – “There’s no way we can do that.”
DESCRIPTION
Teams will work together to tackle a monu- mental task to see that with the support of the
team and by breaking it down, large projects can be doable.
PARTICIPANTS teams of 4 to 8
TIME 25 minutes
SUPPLIES
Pen and paper for notes
Steps:
• Each team is in charge of building Rome. Discuss what needs to be done to build
a large city and make a game plan. Don’t worry about specific knowledge actually required to do the jobs, just think about what needs to be done, how and by whom.
• Take 10 minutes to see how far teams can get, taking notes as they go. This is not a race to see who can get farther, it is just about the process.
• After 10 minutes bring the groups together and talk about the experience. How did each group approach the task? Does “building Rome” still seem so overwhelming? How can you use this process in your work?
